One of the best things about woodworking is that there are many woodworking ideas that are suitable for enthusiasts of all experience and skill levels. Not only are these project ideas rewarding, they are also fun and challenging.
The good news is that woodworking is a project that does not have to be daunting. In fact, many of the following ideas only require some scrap lumber and some basic household tools. The following are some ideas for woodworking projects that beginners can try.
Set Of Wooden Arrows
This project is a gorgeous set of arrows that do not require anything more than a miter saw, a little craft wood and the perfect angle. The pieces can be stained, or they can be painted to match the interior of the home.
It is important to decide in advance how long the pieces of wood should be. Twenty-four inches is a popular length and the width can be as thin as a 1×4. Find the center and cut the pieces in half. Find the center horizontally and vertically before centering the 45 degree angle on the mark.
After cutting the pieces, you will want to paint or stain the wood. Once the pieces have dried, consider adding mending plates on the back of the wooden arrows to keep them in place, and to add extra strength to the arrows once they are hanging on the wall.
Inlay Suites
Pictures can also be made out of wood. These types of woodworking ideas can be made using wood inlay. One type of inlay is intarsia. This inlay involves placing pieces of wood together that are of varying shapes, grains and colors. These shapes will help create a picture, and the intarsia will make flat surfaces look three-dimensional.
To get started with this project, select a picture for reference. Woodworking enthusiasts can find plenty of intarsia templates online for free. Think of it as putting puzzle pieces together, and templates are necessary for accuracy.
Use grain and color on different areas of the inlay to help make the subject matter stand out even more. Consider experimenting with depth by using pieces of different thickness. With this type of project, there is plenty of room for creativity.
Cutting Board
With just some untreated hardwood, a table saw and some sandpaper, a cutting board can be crafted to display culinary creations for guests to enjoy. To ensure the project is safe for food, the mineral oil used should be food-grade.
Beginning by drawing the design on the board, and cut out the design and sand the edges with sandpaper.
Wipe the board free of dust, and apply the mineral oil with a clean cloth. Be sure to wipe with the wood grain. Apply at least 3 coats of mineral oil using the board for kitchen duty.
The cutting boards should never be submerged in soapy water for cleaning, or place in the dishwasher. Only wash by hand and reapply mineral oil to the cutting board every 3 months to keep it looking new.
It does not take a lot of advanced skills to turn these simple woodworking ideas into craft projects to be proud of. A quick search online will yield more projects to help improve woodworking skills.
