Set Up Your Woodworking Shop On A Budget

By Ryan Cross

You already know that you love woodworking, and now that you are learning more and more about the best tips and tricks, you want to have your own space where you can hone your craft. While there are all sorts of expensive tools and accessories that you can buy for woodworking, there is no reason why your new shop has to completely break the bank. These are some tips that you can use to set up an incredible woodworking shop while staying within your budget for the ultimate space.

Price Wisely

Workshop scene. Tools on the table and board. As with anything, you are only going to get what you pay for. With that being said, there is a fine line between going too cheap on your woodworking tools and spending too much. If you buy based on low prices alone, you could find yourself paying more in the long run. When a cheap tool underperforms or breaks down completely, you will have to spend the money to replace it. Take the time to build your collection using the basics first, then filling in with the rest of your tools and gadgets as you move forward. No matter which pieces you buy first, always shop around for the best price.

Three Basic Tools

In order to get the most out of your shop, you need to start off with the three woodworking basics. These are your benchtop planer, tablesaw, and plunge router. When you have these three elements, you have the backbone of your shop and you have the ability to tackle a wide variety of tasks like joinery, shaping, and milling.

Hand Tools

Any good shop for woodworking will also include a range of hand tools. As you expand your collection beyond the three main basics, you will find that adding hand tools here and there will be a cost effective way to load your collection with other helpful essentials. Your hand tools should include hammers, chisels, planers, clamps, measuring implements, and any other small gadgets that you want to have on hand at all times.

Shop Auctions

There is never any rule that you have to go with brand new items as you outfit your shop with all of the woodworking items that you need. The great thing about woodworking is that you can find a number of essentials at local auctions or through online sellers. Make a list of the tools that you are looking for and then see if you can find them at an upcoming auction. Of course, to get the best deal, simply research the retail pricing on each item so that you know what is a smart option to bid on when the time comes.

Putting together a woodworking shop will be a worthwhile venture whether you are a beginner or you have been enjoying the craft for years. You need to have your own space where you can work at your leisure whether you are working on projects to pass the time as a hobby or you would like to venture into building and repairs for a side business.
